BMW i3 Battery Upgrade: Getting More Range From Your i3
Many BMW i3 owners want more range without buying a new car. A battery upgrade can do that, because every i3 uses the same battery space. This guide explains what changes when you upgrade and what to check first.
What an upgrade changes
The BMW i3 was sold with three battery sizes:
- 60Ah (22 kWh): model years 2013 to 2016
- 94Ah (33 kWh): model years 2016 to 2019
- 120Ah (42.2 kWh): model years 2019 to 2022
A larger pack gives more range per charge. The 120Ah pack gives approximately 145 to 160 miles of range, based on the manufacturer's information. A new pack with healthy cells also restores performance lost to ageing.
Will it fit my car?
Yes, physically. Every BMW i3 ever built is structurally compatible with any of the official BMW battery sizes, because the floor enclosure never changed. A 120Ah battery can be fitted to an older model year.
The car's software also needs to recognise the new pack. We handle that part ourselves.
Before you upgrade
- Check your charging setup. Confirm your home charger and the car's onboard charger can handle the pack.
- Check the whole system. Connectors, the high-voltage interlock and the cooling system should be inspected during installation.
- Send us your VIN. We will confirm the right pack for your car.
Our 120Ah upgrade option
We supply new BMW i3 SE09 120Ah packs from the manufacturer, with the manufacturer's warranty. We also handle any software changes the car needs to accept the new pack.
Installation
Installation is done by a qualified technician. We supply installation guides to qualified technicians, and we work with them so the replacement is straightforward. Your mechanic orders the pack from us, and our team supports them through the change.
